In the last few weeks I have had 3 clients die. That is not in and of itself unusual. After 25 years of working with seniors, the disabled and their families I have had to deal with death quite a lot. It is never fun.  However, what makes these three unique is the fact that they all died in nursing homes after stays of 7, 11 and 13 years. My first point to make is making a lie of the often heard concept that nursing home stays are short, usually only a few months. I have lots of clients who have been in nursing homes over 5 years, many over 20.

Let me get to the central point; all of these clients were on Medi-Cal. If we use an average cost of $7,000 per month, they would have spent about $2,600,000 for care. Pay attention now, they did not have to do this. Even after adjusting for small share of cost, these families saved over $2,000,000.  Just 3 families! This is money that went to their spouse, children, grandchildren or other loved ones, NOT to the State or the corporate owners. FAMILY.  How did they do this? They made the decision to. It is as simple as that. They did not sit around wringing their hands or pretending that it would never happen to them. I am proud of having been a part of protecting what they had worked so hard to keep.

You too have a choice. Every year families and estates become victims and are sued by California to recover the costs of long term health care. These were folks who needed health care, not a lawsuit. You need to know that every day there are organizations, individuals and politicians who want this to happen. They want the money. Don’t forget that just a few years ago Congress passed a bill known as “granny goes to jail” that would have made it a crime to get advice on how to protect your home and assets. Luckily it was overturned. But they tried. Be part of the Victory, not one of the victims.

Call today and get in to see me or come to one of my workshops. If you have not been to one of my workshops before you are welcome to attend. If you have been before then call to set up an appointment to see me.  Make sure you and your family are victors, not victims.
